Surface Roughness Measurement for Outdoor Mobile Robotic Applications
نویسندگان
چکیده
The ability to measure terrain roughness is essential for safe and e cient navigation of outdoor mobile robots. This paper describes a prototype system consisting of a colour camera and a laser stripe generator for the measurement of ground surface roughness. With outdoor mobile robotic applications in mind, the system provides a cheap, fast and robust alternative to other methods of roughness measurement. In this paper, details are given of the hardware con guration, the method of roughness characterisation, a simple navigation strategy demonstrating the ability of terrain roughness measurements to aid in navigation, and some preliminary results.

Simulation of Fabrication toward High Quality Thin Films for Robotic Applications by Ionized Cluster Beam Deposition
The most commonly used method for the production of thin films is based on deposition of atoms or molecules onto a solid surface. One of the suitable method is to produce high quality metallic, semiconductor and organic thin film is Ionized cluster beam deposition (ICBD), which are used in electronic, robotic, optical, optoelectronic devices. Many important factors such as cluster size, cluster...
متن کاملRobotic Mapping of Friction and Roughness for Reality-based Modeling
This paper discusses the robotic acquisition and characterization of surface friction and roughness for real-world objects. Our motivation is the construction of detailed “reality-based” models for existing objects that can be used in haptic displays and other applications involving simulation. A key challenge addressed in this paper is the acquisition of these surface properties on real object...
متن کاملAre Autonomous Mobile Robots Able to Take Over Construction? A Review
Although construction has been known as a highly complex application field for autonomous robotic systems, recent advances in this field offer great hope for using robotic capabilities to develop automated construction. Today, space research agencies seek to build infrastructures without human intervention, and construction companies look to robots with the potential to improve construction qua...
متن کاملTerrain Roughness Measurement from Elevation Maps
The Autonomous Planetary Rover Project at Carnegie Melion University is investigating the use of geometric information obtained from terrain elevation maps for mobile robot planning and control. We review how surface geometry has been characterized by surface roughness parameters, and why several of these parameten must be combined to form a vector roughness measurement. Next we propose a techn...

To establish mobile robot operations and to realize survey and inspection tasks, robust and precise measurements of the geometry of the 3-D environment is a required basic sensor technology. For visual inspection, surface classification, and documentation purposes, however, additional information concerning reflectance of measured objects is necessary. High-speed acquisition of both geometric a...
